How to help your child be an entrepreneur
All parents want to give their children every advantage possible to have an independent life when they become adults. However, many children end up being young adults who have no idea what they should do next. These young adults will move back in with their parents so they can make plans about what they want to do in the future.
Today's education system teaches children to be good employees. But the system only works when the economy is at full capacity. That's why every parent should teach their child how to build and manage their own business.
Here's what you can do to help your little one develop in the area of entrepreneurship.
- Stop giving him money without serious reasons!
Many times, parents give their children a weekly or monthly amount of money to buy various things. Some parents even give their children their own credit cards to pay for their expenses without discussing all these financial aspects with them. You shouldn't set limits for your child, but children like cash. If they stop getting them from you, they'll have a good reason to start making their own money. Encouraging your child to earn his own money will help him develop a strong work ethic and develop entrepreneurial creativity from an early age.
- Encourage their entrepreneurial activities!
Maybe your child has expressed a desire to sell lemonade or vegetables in the neighborhood. Let him take the lead, but support him and guide him through the process. It's ok if it doesn't succeed or if it doesn't make a profit. It's all part of the learning process. A business failure teaches the child important entrepreneurial lessons and helps him improve his skills for the next attempt. It is better to fail in childhood, when the stakes are not high, than to fail in adult life, when everything depends on a business. Help him build the foundation of good business sense from childhood.
- Be a mentor to him!
Talk to your child about business plans and money management. How many children learn to write a business plan in school? Your child's business plan will probably be very simple, but it's a great way for them to learn fundamental concepts like profit/loss, expenses and costs. Ask him how he plans to advertise the product or service. This aspect will help the child to consider all aspects of the business. Teach him to create a smart business plan.
- Teach him basic accounting.
Your child won't learn how to track their expenses and income or how to pay their school fees, so it's all up to you. Teach him some basic accounting rules and challenge him to ask you questions. In this way, he will acquire knowledge that he will definitely need later.
- Teach him to...fish.
You probably already know the expression: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day." Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." Apply this approach to parenting to help the child be more independent, to make him save, all to make his adult life much easier.
